My name is Darren and I’m an expat who has lived in Scotland since the turn of the century.
I have also lived down south; yes, down there and prior to that even further south, about 16900km's beyond (that's right, I'm adverse to anything with the word ‘imperial’ in the title, except when it comes to measuring height! Strange that!).
My daughter is my world. She is my reason for being here (both on this forum and in Scotland). I am concerned for her future. I have come to this forum as it seems the facebook groups are being bogged down with negativity and perhaps are losing momentum. I am a person who tries to change things when I feel something is not working. As a foreign national whom has travelled 6 continents (I didn't have appropriate clothing for the 7th, though my mother always said that 'it doesn't matter what you look like as long as you are warm'), I have seen firsthand the inequities on display throughout the globe. I want a better world for my child. I want change.
I have taken a number of steps since the referendum. I have joined and donated to a political party, amended my shopping habits, reported what I have seen to friends around the globe, attended my first political rallies in 20 years (since uni), discovered my first food bank (sadly I had never heard of these until a month ago) and most importantly involved my child in the entire process.
Throughout her life I have always tried to develop my child’s social, environmental and global conscience. Previously she and ! have focused upon troubles further afield, it seems however that it is high time the focus was brought home. I want my child in to be proud of her nation in the years to come, just as I am proud of my homeland (with the glaring exception of my own government). Scotland will always be her home, I intend to help make it better for her.
